The beautiful village of Nikiti is the main center of Halkidiki’s Sithonia municipality. It is positioned at the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula and is a relatively short distance from Thessaloniki (100km). This is an ideal location for anyone wishing to explore the magic of Sithonia.
The main beach of Nikiti is long and wide and easily reached on foot or by car from almost everywhere in Nikiti. The shallow, warm, crystal-clear sea is ideal for families with small children. This beach offers many facilities and consistently wins a Blue Flag (an international eco-label) each year.
It is an old, traditional village, combining dense pine trees with amazing beaches. In the area surrounding Nikiti, many prehistoric settlements have been found.
In Classical times, the most significant city was Galipsos, which was south of Nikiti. In 432 BC, the city broke free from the Athenian alliance and many of its inhabitants moved to the city of Olynthos. In 1300, the whole area was taken by the Athonite monasteries and in the 14th century, farmers from the dependency of the Xenophontos Monastery of Mont Athos, called Neakitou, moved in the area. With the passing of time, the residents grew, and, in the 15th century, the small settlement became an independent village.
