Nearby are several small villages, where the inhabitants still are genuinely interested in you. They talk to you on the streets, ask you where you come from, and sometimes give you sweets for on the road.
We let you experience the hospitality of the Cretans and show you the real authentic life of the Cretans.
Peace and nature are keywords that indicate well, where you end up when you book at Footscapes of Crete.
Griffin vultures regularly fly over because they build their nests in our hills. In the summer you are witnessing the swarms of bee-eaters staying in the area. Also eagles, hawks, owls and Hop are regularly observed. And our sky is very special. Because we have no light pollution, you can observe thousands of stars with the naked eye. On a clear day it seems as if you can touch the Milky Way. We have a telescope with which we can help you to perceive this.
The E4 hiking trail runs next to our gate. We are guide on hikes with our guests. Our guide knows how to find the best spots. In the spring he has flowers walks and goes in search of the wild orchids, anemones, Cretan tulips, gladiolus growing everywhere in Crete. There are walks in various categories, from light to heavy. Cross country, on donkey paths, through ravines and over beaten track. A true experience, you come to places no tourists come, in overgrown churches with beautiful frescoes and where bats have found their place to sleep.
Several herds of sheep graze around our place. Because of this we must ensure that the garden gates remain firmly closed, so our garden is not stripped bare. The soothing tinkle of their bells you can hear daily.
Footscapes of Crete is located just outside the picturesque village Kástellos near Armeni, on the main road from Rethymno in the north, to the south. How small and quiet as well, yet everything is available here. Tavernas, kafenions and supermarkets are not far away.
Footscapes located near an archaeological excavation of the Late Minoan cemetery of Armeni.
In the town of Rethymno, you can stroll along the promenade beside the kilometre-long sandy beach and through the narrow streets in the Old Town. You can get great shopping and from the terraces you can watch the activity in the Venetian harbour. There are several Venetian and Turkish remains and the museums and Fortessa are definitely worth a visit. Rethymno is 15 minutes away. The south coast is 30 minutes.
